The Evolution of the Aprilia Tuono Motorcycle

The Aprilia Tuono is a high-performance naked bike that has been a favorite among riders for more than two decades. First introduced in 2002, the Tuono has undergone several changes and improvements over the years. In this article, we'll take a closer look at the history of the Aprilia Tuono, its year-to-year changes, specifications, and any championships it has won.

2002 - 2005

The Aprilia Tuono was first introduced in 2002 as a naked version of the company's successful RSV Mille sportbike. It was powered by a 998cc V-twin engine that produced 125 horsepower and 76 lb-ft of torque. The first-generation Tuono had a dry weight of 399 pounds and a top speed of around 160 mph. It was equipped with a 43mm Showa fork and a Sachs rear shock, both fully adjustable.

In 2003, Aprilia introduced the Tuono Racing, a limited-edition model with upgraded suspension and a higher-spec engine. The Tuono Racing produced 128 horsepower and had a dry weight of 386 pounds.

For the 2004 model year, Aprilia made several updates to the Tuono. It received a new, lighter frame, a slipper clutch, and a revised fuel injection system. These changes improved the bike's handling and performance.

In 2005, the Tuono Factory was introduced. This model came with Öhlins suspension and forged aluminum wheels, and produced 139 horsepower.

2006 - 2010

In 2006, Aprilia made some significant changes to the Tuono. The bike received a new frame, swingarm, and fuel tank, and the engine was updated to produce 139 horsepower. The new model was called the Tuono 1000 R.

The 2007 Tuono 1000 R received minor updates to the fuel injection system and exhaust, resulting in a small increase in power.

In 2008, the Tuono received a major update. The bike was redesigned with a more aggressive look, and the engine was updated to produce 139 horsepower. The Tuono also received new suspension components, including a fully adjustable 43mm inverted fork and a Sachs shock.

For the 2009 model year, the Tuono received a slipper clutch and a revised fuel injection system, resulting in smoother throttle response.

In 2010, Aprilia introduced the Tuono V4 R. This model was a major departure from the previous Tuonos, as it was powered by a 999cc V4 engine that produced 162 horsepower. The Tuono V4 R was also equipped with advanced electronics, including ride-by-wire throttle, multiple riding modes, and traction control.

2011 - present

The Tuono V4 R received minor updates in 2011, including revised suspension settings and a new exhaust system.

In 2012, Aprilia introduced the Tuono V4 R APRC. This model came with an advanced electronics package that included Aprilia Performance Ride Control (APRC) system, which included traction control, wheelie control, launch control, and quick shifter. The Tuono V4 R APRC produced 167 horsepower and had a dry weight of 407 pounds.

For the 2014 model year, Aprilia introduced the Tuono V4 R ABS. This model came with anti-lock brakes and a new color scheme.

In 2015, Aprilia introduced the Tuono V4 1100. This model featured a larger, 1077cc engine that produced 175 horsepower and 88 lb-ft of torque. The Tuono V4 1100 also received a new electronics package that included APRC, which had been updated to include cornering ABS and a pit limiter.

In 2016, the Tuono V4 1100 received a minor update to its electronics package, with the addition of a quick shift system for clutchless upshifts.

The Tuono V4 1100 Factory was introduced in 2017. This model came with Öhlins suspension, forged aluminum wheels, and a host of other premium features.

For the 2019 model year, Aprilia introduced the Tuono V4 1100 Factory with an updated graphics package, featuring a distinctive new color scheme.

As of 2021, the Tuono V4 1100 Factory continues to be available, with a starting price of $18,999.


The Aprilia Tuono has not competed in any specific championships, as it is a production bike. However, the Tuono's engine has been used in Aprilia's RSV4 superbike, which has won multiple championships in various racing series.
